The Frost Approacheth

Well, we got as much in from the garden as we're going to get; I got a last few tomatoes by flashlight. We also went walking in the park along the Menominee River and I took pictures. Then I headed into Chicago for a lunch date tomorrow with my aunt and sisters, and ran into way too much road destruction!

Anyway, I'll do a proper garden-wrap-up post when I can more easily access the photos.

Bummer. How did your baby squash turn out? Did you harvest them or are they still hanging out a bit longer?

We've had some unseasonable cold weather, had some hail the size of marbles about a week or so ago! It took out some of my tomato seedlings. Really odd. And it's been cold and wet since then. :(

Oh, those two squashes were just fertilized last week. The proto-squash are probably edible, but I doubt they'd be tasty! They need a month more, at least!

And we're supposed to have a hard freeze tonight and light freezes for the next several nights. the squash plant won't survive that!

I hope your summer gets warm and stays warm. Someone should get a decent growing season this year!

Ah bummer, sounds like the squash won't do well then with the frosts. Have you tried cloaches? I haven't but I've seen them for sale here. They also have some sort of netting stuff you put on to keep the frosts from damaging the plants. I usually accept the end of the growing season, much like it sounds like you do.

Oh I really hope we get a decent growning season. That cold snap (and I'm really not kidding, damn hailstones the size of marbles!) was not kind to my tomato seedlings. So far everytihng else is hanging in there. I was talking to a friend and she said that one of the local weather-forcasters who's usually fairly accurate and predicts weather by the moon has predicted that our summer will be over by Feb. :*( It usually goes on pretty strong until about April ish I think?
