Torn World: Got to Have a License

Here's the children's longer rhyme I wrote today.  As background, the Empire doesn't collect taxes.  Instead they collect license fees.  Each citizen has a personal license, much as we have a social security card.  Getting a license is a process involving paying a fee, and, often, filling out forms proving you're qualified for it and/or taking classes or a test to prove you can be responsible in using said license.  But I suspect the licensing system makes even less sense to a Torn World child than our tax system makes to our kids.

Got to have a license
If you want to go to school;
Got to have a license
It’s a stupid grownup rule!

Got to have a license
If you want to sell or buy;
Got to have a license
If you want to live or die!

So if you want to squish a bug
You’ve got to pay the fee
And file a justifying form
You can’t do it for free!

Thanks, Ally, for sponsoring this poem!

Do you really have to have a license to squash a bug? I don't squash many but that would definitely add up!! And do you have to turn the squashed bug in to a department for verification??

Well, it's not out of the realm of possibility. Given the broken background, there's all sorts of potential problems with invasive species and the like; a gardening license would require classes to train you to recognize problem species and what legitimate plants should not be planted near each other, and so on.
