The Giant Melt

I guess that's what they're calling our current January thaw, but we really don't have enough snow and ice here in Milwaukee for that to seem like a proper title. I think I'd be more likely to call it a moderate mush, though I'm sure that wouldn't draw in viewers the way The Giant Melt might be imagined to accomplish.

My lungs are very pleased, however, that the cold isn't snapping. They still aren't sure that I'm over the bronchitis. I don't think I have an infection or virus any more, which is good, but even barely below freezing makes my lungs hurt, which tells me that I'm not 100% healed up yet.

But still, The Giant Melt...it brings to mind huge cheesy sandwiches, hot fudge sundaes, glaciers shrinking, or the Wicked Witch of the West's half-brother moaning, in whatever singing range is below baritone in fantasy worlds that include over-sized humanoids, "I'm melting!"

Or perhaps it's my brain melting, with the siren call of that wonderful flat bed singing lullabies and promising sweet dreams if only I'll give away the toothpicks holding my eyes open, spread a sheet with no cat hair between me and the rest of the bed, pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist, at least until my alarm goes off at Oh-Dark-Uh-Oh in the morning, so I can pour myself into work clothes and go be focused and competent compiling and telling other people's stories for eight hours.

Nah--the Wicked Anti-Munchkin of the West is a better image. So let's climb the soy stalk to see the wizard, and remember, unless you want a mundane balloon trip back to black-and-white land, don't look behind the curtain.

You're having a thaw?

Well, I guess, technically, it's warm enough for stuff to melt; we just have so much of the stuff it's not melting yet.

I wrote a haiku a while back, though a bit later in the year:

Tulips in the sun
Oh, Milwaukee in the Spring!
Sleet falls from gray skies.
