Flash Fiction: Coyote's Explanation

So, a few weeks back there was this news story about a coyote who got himself stuck in the grille of a car.

And[info]ysabetwordsmith asked how Coyote was going to explain that to Raven and Jackrabbit.

Raven! Jackrabbit!
I'm so glad to see you!

It was a nice, straight, smooth shortcut,
nothing to worry about really, just some of
those silly human constructs on it occasionally.
And it worked, though not exactly the way I'd
planned--miles and miles of desert gone
in mere hours, while I curled up in a nice
cozy warm nook and napped.

If getting back out of the contraption hadn't
been so hard, or if the humans hadn't locked
me up, and distracted me with three delicious
meals a day and room service and everything
a guy could want--they even cleaned up after
the--you know.

Anyway, I'd have had plenty of time to case
the whole City before Callie arrived if they'd
just let me go. As it was, I kept thinking, this
is the life, and it wasn't until the day Callie
was meeting me that I realized I had to
figure a way out.

So now I've got this scrape all down my
leg, and Callie is choosing the restaurants
and casinos, and teasing me for being a
slow-poke because I'm limping along
instead of bragging about how I've been
here for days, and spending my early
winnings on presents and stuff for
her . . .

Do you think you could give me a loan,
just a little one, so I could buy her some

Please let me know what you think! Comments may not buy me breakfast, but they feed the soul.

Thanks for commenting, though I'm not sure what you mean.

You have a very nice collection of You-Tube videos of unusual instruments on your journal. Since I play autoharp and cittern, I enjoyed them. I also enjoyed the ones about making instruments, such as the gourd banjo and the cookie-tin ukelele.

Thanks for dropping by.

Very clever. It gave me a smile.

3 delicious meals a day and room service?

That IS the life!

Poor baby!

A cute take on "why did Coyote cross the road". How sweet! And the news story was pretty amazing too, I thought the poor critter would have been dead for sure after seeing it crammed into the car.

The coyote was fine! Which is what you'd expect if it was Coyote, after all, but pretty amazing for just a natural critter.

As for the story, it's all Ysabet's fault, for reframing the critter, in my mind, as Coyote.

I bet he'd try to have it happen again and get into the driver's seat if he could, being Coyote :0}

Loved the story and photos.

I saw similar photos lately, but it was of a stuck cat. Personally, I don't want to find any thing furry or feathered sticking out of my car's grille.

Oh, me neither. The amazing thing is that after riding 600 miles, this coyote was fine! Just stuck. And eventually, not pleased with captivity, since it escaped.

The photos, I must admit, I linked to from the news story. They're not really "here", they just look like they're here due to the magic of html coding. I normally prefer to use my own photos here, or those of friends, but I haven't been to Las Vegas lately much less at the right moment to take those!

Oh, I do so love Coyote stories! Have you read Thomas King's stuff?

If not, I urge you to run -- not walk -- to the nearest bookstore and buy Green Grass, Running Water.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Being out of work since January, I'm avoiding bookstores, but I figure I won't be broke forever. What section would it be shelved in?

fun story
My first introduction to your Coyote character!
The news story with the real coyote was mind blowing

Re: fun story
Not so much my character as an homage to the traditional, mythic Coyote. But thank you.

A very nice riff on the tradition of Coyote.

Loved this story
