sad

Sorry I haven't been around much. My daughter's cat has been sick (but is better). But when he sniffed the much-loved canned cat food, walked off, and hid under something in the basement, I decided I needed to take him to the vet.

So, I figured I might as well take that no-longer-quite-feral kitten that we had brought into the house when it got so cold (figuring we should get it used to being indoors before sending it among strangers).

I figured on taking it to a shelter; I shouldn't have more cats with my allergies, but the critter insisted on climbing into my lap and purring and purring and petting my face ever so gently with its paws--and my allergies weren't going into overdrive. I fell in love. And it seemed the kitten had too--it followed me around and talked to me and insisted on me holding it while I was trying to write at the computer. And it could sit in my arms for a couple of hours, inches from my nose, and not set off my allergies. So I could enjoy the purring, and the petting, and the playing.

So I needed to take the older cat to the vet, but it was snowing; well, living in Milwaukee makes one rather blase about snow.

But the snow led to me dropping the case in the vet's parking lot, and it popped open. It shouldn't have popped open. But the scared kitten ran off into the snow. The snow was falling fast and the lot was being plowed. Whatever tracks the kitten left were immediately obliterated.

The vet watched the older cat, in the other cat carrier, until the doc was ready, letting me wander around outside calling the kitten.

This was Thursday, and I have been driving back to that neighborhood wander around in the snow calling it, hoping it will hear me and be hungry enough or lonely enough to venture from wherever it's been hiding.

Oh, that's awful. I'm sorry. I hope the little one made it to warmth and safety, somehow.

Awww, poor kitten!

Hopefully it will turn up, or hopefully someone found it and took it in from the snow!

I hope he returns to me. A cat that I can hold for hours is very very rare.

And even more, I hope he is all right, somewhere. He lived outside, growing up feral until I lured him with food and made getting petted a condition of the food until he stopped being confused and decided he liked it. So I'm not worried that snow and cold alone will kill him, unless it gets worse than it has been. But life as a stray isn't as healthy for cats as life with humans.

Thank you. I forgot to tell you the question; then this morning was reminded I had to drive the kid to a meeting, and didn't get to answer your e-mail, but I was asking about the kitten. He is about rabbit sized at this point, and has very soft fur, so it was good to hear that he is more resilient than I realize.

There is some hope that if he runs in the right direction he could find his own way back to the house. The vet is only about a mile away. Though I'd rather find him sooner, instead of waiting and wondering.

Thanks!

I keep wishing I hadn't decided to take him along, but normally taking two cats to the vet is just as safe as taking one.

But the hugs are appreciated.

I am so sorry! Did you tell the vet to keep an eye out for you?

Yes, and a friendly guy in the tire shop next door, and the folks behind the tire shop in the tiny car repair garage, and the drunk manager of the grocery store nearby. They were all really nice, but so far no phone calls.

I'm very sorry.

Have you considered putting an old shirt or pair of sweatpants in the covered cage next to the vet or the tire shop/somewhere it won't get trampled/messed with? Maybe the kitten would go back and sleep in it if you've got an old bit of carpet or something on the cage and it's 'womblike' and has your scent???

*hugs*

I doubt it. I really don't think he stayed that close, though every day I go by and call him.

But thanks for the hugs!

And not cat-related, but check this out, she's one of my friends here and I've known her for a few years. They are just getting their group going but it might be something different to check into or get involved with? http://zellie-bean.livejournal.com/384330.html

I do! It was a little challenging to shrink to 100 X 100 and still have the words semi-legible, but I think I eventually succeeded. :-)

The words were superimposed on the scan. I'll try a different font, when I feel fiddly.
