2009 Rose and Bay Awards

The Rose and Bay awards are for honoring excellence in crowdfunded projects.  There are more details here:  http://community.livejournal.com/crowdfunding/154110.html

I'm delighted that I've been nominated for my fiction (both Fireborn and my Flash Fiction), my Busking in Cyberland series of essays, and even my poetry!

Thank you so much to red_trillium , ysabetwordsmith , and zeemverse  for the nominations!

But now I'm writing to ask you to give me some competition

There's a number of nominations in the fiction category right now, and also in "other".  But very few in poetry and art.  If there's other crowdfunded projects you have enjoyed, please go nominate them.

Or at least tell me about them.  Each person can nominate up to three projects/people per category, and some of my first choices have already been nominated by others.

P.S.  You can, of course, also just browse the nominations for the links, and check out people's work.  There's a lot of good stuff out there!

I wonder if there is a way to do crowdfunding with photography? I haven't thought about it before but that's a thought I suppose, an option to the usual "stock" route.

Photography is an art!

The question is what to do to prompt people to pay?

LOL, if I knew that I'd be ringing up the sales at my Cafepress shop & Blurb books! :)

I guess it would be about how to encourage donors/patrons, what would trigger people dipping into their pockets.

I've got this backlog of photos to get through but perhaps if I do that I should consider some sort of funded contest or photo-shoot.

Thank you for giving me something to think about and a new way of thinking about my work.

What if you did a free icon day -- ask people for a phrase and/or subject matter, and scanned appropriate parts of your photos, adding the words?

Promise to do the first X requests, plus any additional requests for people who donate, and to do all of them if donations reach a pre-set number. Djinni does this, you can look at his journal to see how it works out if you don't follow him.

Or...Haikujaguar has been working on a sketchbook retrospective, uploading into her publicly-accessible Stardancer website some of the sketches in each one, the number of sketches uploaded is partially dependent on donations.

But remember, she's been working on growing her audience for over a decade, and just this year jokes about becoming an "overnight success".

Hmmmm, good thoughts. Thank you :)

If you do an icon day, I'd suggest working up some samples, so people can see what you're offering.

And advertise in the crowdfunding and free stuff communities.
